Sources: Giants, Browns at impasse

The New York Giants still have an interest in Cleveland Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards as Plaxico Burress' replacement, but the two teams are at an impasse in trade talks, according to league sources.

The Giants are now treating the Edwards trade as dead and are focusing on taking a wide receiver with the 29th pick, perhaps Hakeem Nicks of North Carolina, or jumping ahead of the Jets at No. 17 to take Darrius Heyward-Bey of Maryland.

In various discussions, the Browns have asked for defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka and a first-round pick. Giants general manager Jerry Reese has told Cleveland that Kiwanuka is a deal-breaker.

Drafted 5 times...Never Signed?

PALMDALE, Calif. -- The summer night Bill Harrington realized he had become a pariah here in his hometown, he was 85 miles down the road, watching one of the most dazzling prospects scouts could recall, who also happened to be his son.

This was seven years ago, in Long Beach, at a game being played at a tiny 3,000-seat stadium -- an independent league game in which the participants were mostly trying desperately to revive failed dreams of major league glory. On this particular night, however, there was one player whose name was even more recognizable than some of the former big leaguers who were passing through on their way to athletic oblivion, a name that somehow had become representative of all that fans hate about modern-day players. Synonymous with greed. That would be Bill's son, Matt Harrington, who -- after being selected No. 7 in the baseball draft only two years earlier -- had turned down almost $5 million from the Colorado Rockies and who eventually would go on to become the first player in major league history drafted five times without ever signing.

NFL Mock Draft of the Ages - Part 1

espn.com

So many different spins have been put on the NFL draft. Who were the biggest busts? Who were the most memorable steals? What were the greatest drafts by team? What was the best draft class? Which positions pay the most dividends? Etc.

In short, it's difficult to break new ground in discussion of the draft, which has mushroomed into one of the biggest preoccupations of the entire sports calendar for fans. Nevertheless, we reach deep into our imaginations to come up with a fresh, delightfully preposterous spin:

What if we could hop in a time machine and bring back all the best prospects in history for this year's draft?

Cleveland's Joe Smith...Raps?

On the basketball court, he's known for his defense and his consistency. But if you look closely, you'll see Joe Smith also keeps a little rhythm in his step. This Cavs forward moonlights as a musician. Smith said, "It's just been like that my entire life ever since I had a little walkman." Smith sat down with NewsChannel5's Joy Benedict at the House of Blues in Cleveland to show us the method behind the music. "(I) write about basketball, music, love, my love for music," Smith explained. In fact he loves the lyrics so much, Smith now owns his own in-home recording studio, a label, and he just made his debut CD, "Joe Beast: The Beginning."

Bulls Think Garnett's Full of Shit

The Bulls trudged down the Berto Center stairs after their lengthy film session Thursday morning clutching playbooks with the playoff scouting report on the Celtics. And, yes, those reports contained pages on Kevin Garnett, even though Celtics coach Doc Rivers said it's likely the All-Star big man's sore right knee will sideline him for the entire NBA playoffs. "I'm not buying that," Bulls forward John Salmons said. "I'll believe that when I see it." Derrick Rose added: "Knowing him, he would play if his leg was broken. We still have to think he's going to play."

Cavs Clinch NBA's Best Record

cbs.sportsline.com

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Cleveland Cavaliers clinched the NBA's best record and home-court advantage throughout the playoffs Monday night behind LeBron James' 37 points in a 117-109 victory over the Indiana Pacers.

Getting the home-court edge was especially important because Cleveland has a 39-1 record at home, the best in the league.

Mo Williams scored 18 points and Zydrunas Ilgauskas had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Cleveland, which won its fifth straight.

Danny Granger scored 38 points, rookie Brandon Rush scored 27 and Troy Murphy had 17 points and 13 rebounds for Indiana.

The Pacers had already been eliminated from the playoff race, but had won seven of 10 and had been playing particularly well on offense. The Cavaliers took the Pacers seriously after Indiana stunned them 96-95 on Feb. 10 at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Cleveland was able to focus a day after a 31-point win over Boston.

Welcome Back...Manny?

ESPN.com news services

Manny Ramirez is already yearning for the old days -- of Cleveland.

Ramirez, who early last month signed a two-year, $45 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers, says a return to the Cleveland Indians before retirement would be ideal.

"I would like to play for Cleveland one more time, to go back where I started," Ramirez told USA Today. "I have so many good memories there, why not?

"I think to go back where you started is everyone's dream."

Ramirez, 37, led the Dodgers to the 2008 NL West title by hitting .396 with 17 homers and 53 RBIs in 53 regular-season games after a trade from the Boston Red Sox.

In the playoffs, he batted .520 with four homers, 10 RBIs, nine runs and 11 walks in eight games.

The Dodgers host the San Francisco Giants on Monday afternoon in their home opener.

According to USA Today, Ramirez talked to Chicago White Sox designated hitter Jim Thome this spring about an eventual return to Cleveland, telling his Indians teammate from 1993 to 2000 that if they were free agents after this season they should consider a reunion.

"Manny was very sincere when he brought that up to me," Thome said, according to the newspaper. "Manny was saying how special that would be for us to both go back together. He was very passionate. Baseball's such a weird thing. You never know what's going to happen."

Ramirez can opt out of his deal with the Dodgers next season, and Thome's contract with the White Sox expires at the end of this season.

"Me and Thome back in Cleveland?" Ramirez asked, according to the report. "That would be sweet.

"I love L.A. I really do. But the way the city responded to me, it reminded me a lot of how it was in Cleveland."

Salty's Thoughts: You can't believe a ton of what comes out of this guys mouth. He could just be reaching for attention. That being said, he can still hit, that's obvious. He just signed a 2 year deal, so he'd be 39. A 39 year old Manny...at his asking prices...makes this highly unlikely.

Another (local) NFL Player Arrested

CLEVELAND -- Buffalo Bills defensive back Donte Whitner has been formally charged with aggravated disorderly conduct and resisting arrest for his role in an altercation outside a Cleveland nightclub early Saturday.

Police handcuffed and used a stun gun on the 23-year-old Whitner outside the House of Blues after he forced his way past them and then broke free from officers. Whitner was taken to jail and released later pending formal charges.

Cleveland police spokesman Thomas Stacho confirmed the charges on Monday. No court date has been set but Whitner will make an initial appearance in the next two weeks, Stacho said.

Joba bashes NYC in DUI video

He had the right to remain silent, and should have used it. Yankees righthander Joba Chamberlain instead ripped New Yorkers as rude and city drivers as cutthroat after his drunken-driving arrest - before taking a boozy shot at pinstriped icon Yogi Berra. "No bull----, he might not be as tall as the front of your car," Chamberlain told the Nebraska state trooper who found an open bottle of Crown Royal sitting inside the hurler's BMW. Chamberlain's cracks were captured in an arrest video uncovered by thesmokinggun.com. It showed the 23-year-old going through a variety of sobriety tests and chatting amiably with Trooper Michael Grummert. "The biggest thing that I've noticed driving here and there is if you let somebody in, they open the window and say 'thank you,' " Chamberlain said about getting behind the wheel in Nebraska. "In New York, they might hit you. Yeah, it's a joke." The video caught Chamberlain after he was pulled over last Oct. 18 for doing 70 mph in a 55 mph zone. Chamberlain was heading home from a local strip club when stopped. (New York Daily News)

I've also been hearing that the new regime is smitten with Mark Sanchez of USC and it wouldn't surprise some -- though it would floor everybody in Cleveland -- if the Browns took Sanchez with the fifth pick of the draft.

Braylon Edwards Rumor

Cleveland.com/Branson Wright:

Rumors continue to circulate about the Cleveland Browns trading wide receiver Braylon Edwards.

The latest comes from arrowheadpride.com on how the Kansas City Chiefs could use Edwards and make a deal for the wide receiver with some draft picks. The biggest question is how much the Chiefs would give up for Edwards.

The Chiefs, with new quarterback Matt Cassel, could use a weapon like Edwards (as long as he catches the ball). And the Browns could use more draft picks.

A new environment may do Edwards some good, and the Browns, especially under the new regime of coach Eric Mangini, could use the influx of new players.

This deal would especially work if the Browns could get a first-round pick from the Chiefs and use it on Missouri wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, who was in town visiting the Browns

Diplomat: Pirates Capture 21 US Sailors

Somali pirates on Wednesday hijacked a U.S.-flagged cargo ship with 21 crew members aboard, a diplomat and a U.S. Navy spokesman said. The Kenya-based diplomat identified the vessel as the 17,000-ton Maersk Alabama and said all the crew members are American. The diplomat spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. The U.S. Navy confirmed that a U.S. flagged ship with 21 members of crew was hijacked early Wednesday off the eastern coast of Somalia. Spokesman Lt. Nathan Christensen said the attacked happened in the early hours of the morning hours, about 280 miles (450 kilometers) northeast of Eyl, a town in the northern Puntland region of Somalia. Christensen said there were U.S. citizens aboard the ship, but he did not say how many. He declined to release the name of the ship until the family members of the crew are notified. He said the ship was operated by the Danish company Maersk, which deals with the U.S. Department of Defense. Christensen said the vessel was not working under a Pentagon contract when hijacked. Maersk Kenya Managing Director Rolf Nielsen said the company was still verifying reports of the hijacking. An U.S. embassy spokeswoman was not immediately able to confirm the incident. Andrew Mwangura of the East African Seafarers' Assistance Program said the ship was taken about 400 miles (640 kilometers) from the Somali capital, Mogadishu. The vessel is the sixth to be seized within a week and the first with an all-American crew.

Salty's Thoughts: Maybe now SOMEBODY will step in and stop these Pirates. Johnny Depp must be disgusted.

Don't Skimp on the Shrimp

A woman called 911 to report she didn't get as much shrimp as she wanted in her fried rice at a Texas restaurant. Haltom City police on Tuesday released the taped emergency call, in which the customer is heard telling the dispatcher "to get a police officer up here, what has to happen?" The customer also said: "He didn't even put extra shrimp in there." The upset customer had left the Fort Worth-area restaurant when an officer arrived Monday afternoon. Restaurant workers said the woman had been denied a refund after leaving with her order, then returning to complain. Cook June Lee said nothing was wrong with the meal, and that "some customers are happy. Some are not." ___ Information from Fort Worth Star-Telegram & KDFW-TV: www.star-telegram.com & www.myfoxdfw.com

Salty's Thoughts: If anything was Full Gump (no Gump Shrimp pun intended), this is it. Why is calling 911 to complain the new trend? It should hold a mandatory jail/Community Service sentance. That may stop these Gumps from dialing emergency over problems with food.

Liquor License Suspended at MLB Stadium

Beer and alcohol sales were banned at the Tigers-Blue Jays game Tuesday night, a day after their season opener was delayed when unruly fans littered the field with baseballs and debris. The clubhouses were cleared of booze, too, after the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario suspended the liquor license at Rogers Centre for three dates because of past infractions. The panel cited five broken rules at baseball and football games and concerts dating to the Canadian Football League championship game in 2007. The stadium will also be dry on April 21 when Toronto plays Texas, and for a CFL game on Aug. 1. Both affected baseball games fell on dates when the price of upper deck seats was cut to $2, a promotion called "Messin' With Recession." The ban covers everything from concessions, vendors and restaurants to the beer refrigerators in both locker rooms. Signs posted Tuesday at stadium entrances listed five reasons for the license suspension: permitting drunkenness, permitting the use of narcotics, selling and serving to apparent minors, failure to request approved identification and permitting illegal liquor on the premises. The Blue Jays' 12-5 win Monday was delayed nine minutes in the eighth inning when fans threw two baseballs in the direction of Detroit left fielder Josh Anderson and tossed a handful of paper planes and empty beer cups onto the field. Anderson was pleased to hear alcohol would not be sold Tuesday. "That's good," he said. "These people can't handle it." Mario Coutinho, vice president for stadium operations and security, said the three dry dates were jointly selected in talks between stadium staff and the alcohol commission. "We proposed some dates that were suitable to their criteria," Coutinho said. "They came with 'X' number dates of suspension and we suggested some proposed dates based on the events that we've had in the past." Fans who want to exchange their tickets for the affected dates will be allowed to, subject to availability. Last season, the Blue Jays halted alcohol sales in the upper deck for three games in May and June after fans brawled in the stands, leading to almost 100 ejections. On Tuesday, the team increased security by checking bags and patting down fans in a bid to stop alcohol from being smuggled into the stadium. Tuesday's ban meant little to Tigers manager Jim Leyland. "That has no bearing on me," Leyland said. "I don't drink beer, particularly not during the game."

Elway's Son Quits Football

Redshirt freshman quarterback Jack Elway is leaving the Arizona State football program but remaining in school as a student. "He's just tired of football and wants to do something else with his life," ASU coach Dennis Erickson said Monday. "He made a decision, and we all understand it. He would have played here eventually." Elway, son of Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, was the only scholarship quarterback in the 2008 recruiting class out of Cherry Creek (Colo.) High School. He redshirted last season and was among five quarterbacks competing for the starting job vacated by Rudy Carpenter. Now the quarterback competition is down to four: senior Danny Sullivan, sophomores Samson Szakacsy and Chasen Stangel and true freshman Brock Osweiler. Scottsdale Saguaro High School quarterback Cole Rarrick plans to walk-on at ASU in the fall.

Truth or Rumor?

The doctor who administers the NFL policy on performance-enhancing drugs told highly regarded USC linebackers Brian Cushing and Clay Matthews Jr. on Friday that neither tested positive for banned substances, including steroids, according to sources close to both players. Cushing and Matthews were included in previous reports indicating that up to six prominent players had tested positive for performance-enhancing or recreational drugs in tests administered in February at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. Also named were Boston College defensive tackle B.J. Raji, Illinois cornerback Vontae Davis, Florida wide receiver Percy Harvin and UTEP kicker Jose Martinez. Cushing, Raji, Davis and Harvin all are projected to be first-round picks in the NFL draft later this month. NFLDraftbible.com reported that Cushing and Matthews tested positive for steroids and the other four for marijuana. SI.com, meanwhile, also reported that Raji had tested positive for a banned substance.

Tampa Paid Bucs

Signing Kellen Winslow, 25, to an extension was not a condition of the trade, but rather what the Bucs viewed as an opportunity to lock up one of the league's best young tight ends rather than lose him to free agency after two seasons. "We made the trade with the future in mind," general manager Mark Dominik said Monday. "We consider Kellen a leader on the football team and when you trade away multiple draft picks, you obviously want the player for the long haul. Kellen has demonstrated he's very excited about being part of our community and part of the Bucs. We're excited to have him." Winslow only participated in the first day of a three-day, voluntary minicamp last week.

Did Weis oversell Brady Quinn to Browns?

There's a huge perception among fans in Cleveland that Brady Quinn is a quality starting quarterback in the NFL. Fueling this fire is Charlie Weis and his evaluation of Quinn. But what Weis thinks, and what others who worked for and with Weis at New England think, are vastly different. And no matter how close they may be, there's nothing that Weis can say to change their mind. In fact, when Josh McDaniels was on the staff at New England, the Patriots did not have Quinn very high on their board, regardless of the wisdom stemming from Weis' evaluation. Taking this one step further, there were some well-respected personnel men in the NFL who did not want to take the Browns job (prior to Eric Mangini becoming the main man) because they didn't feel Quinn could be the starter. The expectations of the fans with regard to Quinn are enormous, and sometimes this can burden a franchise.

Salty's Thoughts: If you're an NFL GM, Coach, Scout, you shouldn't allow yourself to be "sold" by a College Coach. My 2 cents.

Blockbusted?

Movie rental company Blockbuster Inc. said Monday the risk that it may not complete financing deals raises "substantial doubt" about its ability to continue as a going concern. Dallas-based Blockbuster, which has struggled amid the rising popularity of DVD-by-mail services like Netflix, disclosed the warning in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The company had already cautioned last month that its auditor was likely to raise doubts about its ability to stay in business. A going-concern qualification refers to an auditor's assessment of a company's ability to continue to operate for the foreseeable future. Last week, Blockbuster said its revolving and term loan agreement was amended, giving it a $250 million revolving loan refinancing that matures on Sept. 30, 2010. Lenders including JPMorgan also agreed to waive any default that could result if auditors attached a "going concern" classification. But on Monday, the company said its lenders' obligation to fund the $250 million credit facility is subject to meeting certain conditions, and there can be no assurances that these conditions will be met. Even if the loan is funded, the company said it "may not have sufficient liquidity to finance the ongoing obligations of our business, which raises substantial doubt about our ability to continue as a going concern." Blockbuster said it believes that it will be in a position to close the amended credit facility by around May 11, though "there can be no assurance regarding these matters." Shares fell 3 cents to 85 cents in after-hours trading, having closed earlier at 88 cents.

Salty's Thoughts: Their prices are too high. Late fees are for the Half Gumps.

Yet another NFL player arrested

NFL receiver Reggie Williams was charged with drug possession after off-duty policemen used a Taser to subdue him when he refused to leave a bar. Houston police spokesman Kese Smith said Williams was impaired when he refused to leave a bar Sunday night. He struggled with two off-duty officers who tried to escort him out and one of them used a Taser on him. Police said jail officials later found a small bag believed to contain cocaine in Williams' back pocket. He was charged on Monday with possession of a controlled substance and freed after posting a $2,000 bond. In February, the 25-year-old unrestricted free agent was arrested in Houston on DWI and possession of marijuana charges, which were later dropped. He played for the Jacksonville Jaguars last season. A call to Williams' agent was not immediately returned.

More Trade Talks?

The Giants have called the Browns about Braylon Edwards, who reportedly would welcome playing for the Giants if he was traded. Arizona still hasn't signed Anquan Boldin to a new deal, although he has two years remaining on his old one. Cards coach Ken Whisenhunt said at the league meetings the two sides are talking. And there's always the possibility the Bengals will finally get tired of Chad Ocho Cinco - and it would be great fun to watch Tom Coughlin deal with him.

Salty's Thoughts: Does anyone even care?

Dear NFL...

Being a Season Ticket Holder (which sometimes is more punishment than it it is fun), I want to voice my displeasure with you, the NFL Scheduling Committee.

Due to the fact that I am forced to purchase Preseason Tickets to (2) Home Games every year, I would hope that you would at least give us a decent match up. Then I receive the Preseason Schedule. Cleveland (joke of the NFL) vs the Detroit Lions (winless?). I mean, seriously? This has to be a joke. Where's Ashton, I know I've just been punked. Show me the camera. Please? Demi? Anyone?

Maybe I can trade my tickets to someone on the street and have them kick me in the marbles. At least the kick will be free. The kicks I receive for the (8) Regular Season Home Games this year aren't so cheap.

Whatever.

Teammates Defend Stallworth

Cleveland Plain Dealer

By now, you've got Browns receiver Donte Stallworth all figured out, right? The braids, the Bentley, the history of substance abuse, the DUI manslaughter charge. Just your typical, spoiled, rich, partying athlete who has little regard for others or the law. But those close to him say that's not the case. "Donte is the complete opposite of the image you may believe right now," said former Browns center LeCharles Bentley, who has known Stallworth since they were both rookies in New Orleans in 2002. Stallworth's friends and team- mates say he's devastated over the death of pedestrian Mario Reyes, 59, whom Stal lworth struck and killed with his Bentley on the morning of March 14 in Miami Beach, according to authorities there. He will be arraigned April 23 on charges of DUI manslaughter and faces four to 15 years in prison if convicted. He also faces a probable suspension by the NFL for violating its conduct and substance-abuse policies. In one fateful moment, Stallworth ended a life and altered the course of his own. "Of course, Donte made a poor choice, and you can never get back a life," said Browns linebacker D'Qwell Jackson. "No one knows that more than Donte. But people should know that Donte is a great person who made a terrible mistake, not a terrible person." Stallworth had a blood-alcohol level of .126 -- over the legal limit in Florida -- according to the toxicology report. Four days after the tragedy, he returned to Cleveland to resume working out in the Browns' off-season program. His mother, Donna, and brother Larry joined him in Cleveland for support.

Cleveland Plain Dealer

Salty's Thoughts: I like how they are defending the man, and not attempting to sugarcoat his decision making skills or lack there of. That being said, my last two posts have been from the PD. Remember when the News Herald had decent stories? RIP Hal, we miss you. I tried to find Donte's mug shot, posted the closest I could snag.

Quinn still tradebait?

Cleveland Plain Dealer

Brady Quinn fans shouldn't relax just yet. The possibility of a trade to Denver still exists. Kyle Orton, the quarterback the Broncos received in Thursday's trade of Jay Cutler to the Bears, is not the answer. Josh McDaniels, Denver's coach, has got to know that. Neither is Chris Simms, whom the Broncos signed before this brouhaha with Cutler became a daily story. As soon as the dust settled after the trade of Cutler to Chicago, the question became: So who's Denver's next quarterback? Speculation in Denver and elsewhere is that the Broncos might use their two first-round draft picks -- No. 12 and No. 18 -- to move up high enough to select Mark Sanchez of Southern California. Seattle, sitting at No. 4, already is giving signals it suddenly loves Sanchez, perhaps to sway a deal with Denver. The reality of the NFL is that nobody wants to be in the top five on draft day. And that includes Denver. So there's Quinn, still not endorsed by the Browns as their starting quarterback as he enters his third season. And there's McDaniels in Denver, filled with positive feedback about Quinn from Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis, whom McDaniels adores as an offensive football coach. If McDaniels can't trust Weis, then who can he trust?

Salty's Thoughts: Browns season hasn't started and I feel kind of burnt out. Or I feel like I've been screwed over by someone I cared about. That being said, if they're going to do something, just do it. Rip the band-aid off fast, it hurts less that way.
