Bye, Bye, Williams?

The Browns are interested in trading defensive end Corey Williams, who doesn't seem to fit in the two-gap style preferred by Eric Mangini.

Quinn to start?

Brady Quinn should be named the starting quarterback this week, giving him and the Browns two weeks to prepare the offense for the opener against Minnesota.

New sports movie

This Friday, an independent movie called "Big Fan" opens in Philadelphia and New York.

It's a "dramedy" that mines what happens when a 35-year-old parking garage attendant with a pretty bleak life and an unhealthy obsession with the Giants has a chance encounter with the team's fictional star. Things don't go well.

If you aren't this guy (thank the Lord for that), then you have likely encountered him.

The movie is the directing debut of Robert Seigel who screenwrote "The Wrestler" and (even more impressively) is a former editor of The Onion. The movie stars comedian Patton Oswalt.

Inevitably, pointy-headed movie critics are going to get ahold of this flick and broad-brush anyone who happens to own a jersey with a player's number on it as being a replica of Oswalt's character.

And then they'll explain sports fandom in general as being a terrarium for all sorts of societal ills. Then they'll go back to explaining to us the brilliant social commentary made in Zoolander.

Check out the trailer here.

Salty's Thoughts: That movie looks awesome. I will surely check it out.

Sanchez to start for the Jets

What the football world expected became reality Wednesday when the Jets' quarterbacks were informed that Mark Sanchez is the new starter, team sources confirmed to ESPN.

Sanchez will start the Jets' third preseason game Saturday night against the New York Giants -- and, more importantly, the team's regular-season opener at Houston against the Texans.

It wasn't a question of if Sanchez would be named the starter, but when. Even though he struggled some against the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night, the Jets have seen enough moxie and talent from Sanchez to make this year's fifth overall pick the face of the franchise.

The designation of Sanchez as the Jets' starter was first reported by FoxSports.com.

The Jets traded up in the draft to select Sanchez, who was signed to a five-year deal that could be worth up to $60 million, including $28 million guaranteed.

Trade Z?

Zydrunas Ilgauskas' contract is a massive trade chip because of how many teams will be looking to dump salary for next summer. The Cavs will not have a great deal of cap room, so using that expiring contract could be the last swing at making a major addition for a while. For that reason, Danny Ferry would be compelled to consider it despite his personal relationship with Ilgauskas.

Josh Cribbs #2 WR?

That's what I'm hearing as of now, which leads me to this question:

Why hasn't Marvin Harrisons name been mentioned? He'd be a great #2 for our team, wouldn't he?

Thoughts?

$tallworth

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell did the Browns a huge favor by suspending receiver Donte Stallworth without pay for the 2009 season. It relieves the Browns of a combustible public-relations issue and even costlier consequences to their team salary cap. The Browns can keep Stallworth on the reserve/suspended list through the 2009 season. He will be out of sight and out of mind. He is able to work out on his own, according to modified terms of his house arrest granted by a Florida judge on Tuesday, but the NFL prohibits him from entering the Browns' team facility.

Thunder & Lightning?

Eric Mangini has been talking about Jerome Harrison having "a great opportunity to continue to carve out his role." And he's been talking about using a multiback system with the Browns. Jamal Lewis would still be the main focus, but someone else -- probably Harrison -- would have a significant number of carries.

Browns QB Race

Even as he took the lead in the Browns' quarterback competition Saturday night, Brady Quinn learned the enormity of what winning the duel with Derek Anderson might bring. Not only must Quinn minimize his own mistakes, but he also must encourage his teammates to shake off their own maddening miscues. The Browns stretched their string of games without an offensive touchdown to seven, which snuffed any chance that new coach Eric Mangini had seen enough to make a decision on his quarterback. ''No, I'm going to wait and see where we are as we keep going,'' Mangini said.

Cavs content?

With just about six weeks to go before training camp, the Cavaliers look to have just about solidified their roster. They've been looking at various good-shooting big men all summer as they look for an option when teams bunch coverage on LeBron James and Shaquille O'Neal. Losing out on Joe Smith opens the door for J.J. Hickson and Darnell Jackson to win a spot in the opening-night rotation.

McNabb texts about Vick

"Sign him." That was the text message from Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb to coach Andy Reid on July 26, soon after commissioner Roger Goodell announced reinstatement plans for Michael Vick. "You're killing me," responded Reid, via text to McNabb.

Salty's Thoughts: Smart signing by the Eagles. Will be interesting to see how he's used.

Jets don't miss Mangini

Months removed from the restrictive, don't-say-a-peep regime of Eric Mangini, the New York Jets say they truly appreciate what new Coach Rex Ryan is. And what he isn't. As for the Jets, the mantra uttered in every corner of their camp is that the relaxed Ryan "treats us like men," with the implication that the rigid Mangini didn't. Without naming Mangini, specifically, guard Damien Woody said not being afforded that respect "is almost degrading."

Lights Out for Big Dog

CLEVELAND -- John Thompson, the Cleveland Browns fan who goes by the name "Big Dog," was arrested Monday night for drunken driving and other traffic offenses, police said.

Thompson was arrested at 9:49 p.m. after his vehicle was seen weaving on Lorain Avenue at West 128th Street and did not have the headlights on, police said.

Police said he failed a field sobriety test and his Breathalyzer test was .12, which is more than the legal limit of .08.

He was in Cleveland City Jail this morning.
